Pure yttrium nitrate hexahydrate is a white, odorless, hygroscopic, crystalline solid. Upon heating, the yttrium compound does not exhibit true melting behavior, but rather melts incongruently, releasing water of crystallization, at approximately 88–90 °C. A defined liquid phase of the stoichiometric compound does not exist; with further heating, stepwise dehydration occurs, followed by the thermal decomposition of the nitrate to yttrium oxide, a process that is complete at approximately 600 °C.
