Pure niobium pentafluoride exists as a white, highly hygroscopic solid. The highly refractive, colorless NbF5 molecules deliquesce slowly in air. In the gas phase, niobium pentafluoride exists as a monomer, and in the solid state as a ring-shaped tetramer; the crystal structure is monoclinic, space group C2/m No. 12.
